Adjective Conjugation (形容詞)

Japanese adjectives conjugate for tense and negation, just like verbs. There are two types: い-adjectives (native Japanese) and な-adjectives (often Chinese-origin). They follow completely different rules.

The Two Types

い-adjectives (i-adjectives)

End in い in their dictionary form. The い changes when conjugating.

高いたかいtall / expensive
安いやすいcheap
おいしいdelicious
新しいあたらしいnew

な-adjectives (na-adjectives)

Behave more like nouns. They need な when modifying a noun directly, but conjugate with だ/です like nouns.

静かしずかquiet
元気げんきhealthy / energetic
便利べんりconvenient
好きすきliked / favorite

Watch out: fake い-adjectives

Some な-adjectives end in い but are notい-adjectives. You must memorize these:

きれい (pretty) — きれいな人

嫌い / きらい (disliked) — きらいな食べ物

有名 / ゆうめい (famous) — 有名な人

い-Adjective Conjugation

Drop the final い and add the ending.

いい / 良い — The Irregular One

いい (good) is the only irregular い-adjective. It uses the older form よい for all conjugations except the present:

Present: いい / いいです

Negative: よくない (not いくない)

Past: よかった (not いかった)

Past neg.: よくなかった

Te-form: よくて

Adverb: よく (well, often)

な-Adjective Conjugation

な-adjectives conjugate like nouns — the adjective itself doesn't change, only what follows it.

Present (casual)〜だ静かだ
Present (polite)〜です静かです
Negative (casual)〜じゃない静かじゃない
Negative (polite)〜じゃないです静かじゃないです

な-adjective: add な before the noun

しずかなばしょ — a quiet place

Use the te-form to connect multiple adjectives describing one thing, similar to “and” in English.
